Statement about Race at BJU

Many people are deceived. They say interracial marriage is a sin. Scripture has nothing to say about interracial marriages. What it does talk about is interfaith. They were pagans, idolaters, and they worshiped false gods. Look how Solomon was led astray.

The Bible on Interracial Marriage

In the last couple of weeks I have encountered two different Christian arguments against interracial marriage that have left me feeling extremely unsettled. It may have been a coincidence that these two encounters happened within such a short period of time, but as a Christian with a voice I cannot stand by and say nothing. That said, in the event that you ever come across one of these bunk arguments yourself, here is a brief look at what the Bible REALLY says about this issue.

Discussion on the biblical perspective on interracial dating and marriage. Some people believe that interracial marriages are prohibited in the Scriptures.

Some people insist that the Bible meant for the races to remain pure, therefore prohibiting any kind of interracial marriage. Usually two biblical texts are drawn upon to support that view. One is the fact that Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. As you recall, Shem received a patriarchal blessing, and an enlargement of that was given to Japheth. Some have neatly contrived from the three sons of Noah, three survivors of the flood, that this is the historic basis for the three basic generic types of human beings: the Caucasian, the Negroid, and the Mongoloid.

They claim that this is the biblical justification for there being a curse put on the black race, and white people should have no intermarriage with them. This was cited, for example, in the early documents of Mormonism, which was a great embarrassment to them when it was made public a few years ago. In the case of both these arguments, I would say that that is the flimsiest evidence I can think of to support what is ultimately a racist view of the matter.

Any couple that chooses to get married in a culture that has a high degree of racism is asking for all kinds of tension directed against their marriage. I think one of the strongest texts that does relate to this is in the Old Testament, where we read that Moses who was the mediator of the old covenant took to himself a wife who was a Cushite.

What does the Bible say about interracial dating and marriage?

There are a few incidental mentions of race in the Bible e. Moses was married to a Cushite Ethiopian woman Numbers , and God was angry with Aaron and Miriam for criticizing that marriage. The Hebrews were forbidden to marry Canaanites and other pagan peoples Exodus ; Deuteronomy The reason was because those people worshipped idols, not because of race; the Hebrews, Amorites, Canaanites, etc.

S kin color has long divided people. The prejudice of racism is worldwide, even today. Thus, this question is of great importance. In America, as we continue to see the influx of people from all different cultures, who have all different colors of skin, it is imperative that we search the Scriptures so see how we should live. Some people believe that interracial marriages are prohibited in the Scriptures.

Often they will argue that marriage with foreigners implying people both of different culture and color was prohibited throughout the Old Testament. Actually, the prohibitions were not strictly against Jewish-Gentile marriages as racial mixture, but against believer-unbeliever marriages cf. Deuteronomy Solomon was judged for marrying, not simply foreign women, but foreign women who believed in false gods. In fact, in the Old Testament provisions were made for Gentiles to convert to Judaism cf.

Exodus , One should also remember both Rahab and Ruth , Gentile women of faith; they were both accepted into the community of believers they are even in the genealogical line of Jesus! Matthew
