An Early Pregnancy Scan sometimes also called a Viability Scan or Dating Scan provides reassurance in this very early stage of your pregnancy. A pregnancy can be seen on scan from as early as 6 weeks from the first day of your last period LMP. We should be able to see a heartbeat from 6 weeks. Sometimes it is requested by a doctor or midwife to confirm that your pregnancy is healthy in this case your scan is often called a viability scan and to calculate the date when your baby is due usually referred to as a dating scan. It can also be performed to confirm the results of a pregnancy test or just to provide you with some reassurance that all is progressing as it should be. Dating Scan Before 10 weeks
Routine ultrasound should not be offered or requested simply to confirm an ongoing early pregnancy in the absence of any clinical concerns, symptoms or specific indications. The purpose of the scan is to confirm viability, accurately establish gestational age, determine the number of viable fetuses, evaluate gross fetal anatomy and, if requested, assess the NT as part of the risk assessment for aneuploidy.

The common first step will be a dating scan between weeks as we like to check your baby before 10 weeks. Before 7 weeks it may be too early to acquire this information. There is a small chance that a transvaginal scan may need to be performed in order to get a clearer view. Some patients prefer this method of scanning as the resolution of the image is better, improving the accuracy of the measurements and the clarity of the pictures. It is important that you see a Midwife as early as possible in your pregnancy. Women have their first and longest Antenatal appointment between 6 – 12 weeks of pregnancy with their Midwife. This is called a “booking” visit and involves questions about your health, any illnesses or previous pregnancies.

These are universal standard practices and will not harm you or the baby. No bladder filling or other preparations are required for the purpose.
