Aldi stores in Leeds and across Yorkshire have been chosen as ‘guinea pigs’ to trial the sale of compostable bags to put your shopping in. Stores in other parts of the country will sell paper bags instead as part of the eco-friendly trial, which will be rolled out in July. Supermarket chiefs will then look at whether the biodegradable, compostable bags or the paper bags are more popular – and the winner will be implemented in every single Aldi store across the country.

The new biodegradable bags, which are being rolled out across all 78 stores in Yorkshire and the Humber, are made from a material called Bioplast.
